"After my dodgy encounter with a black bear a few years before, I wasn't too keen on bears in general, and I definitely didn't have warm feelings about polar bears. Then on a research trip to Canada for SOUL EATER, a wild one looked into my eyes for a moment, and everything changed. The bear regarded me dispassionately, as predators do, and of course it would have eaten me if it could; but its dark eyes held such innocence. And we're melting its world. After that, I rewrote the passages in the story about ice bears. They were a lot richer because of that encounter."Reviews
